J.S. Bach: Christmas Oratorio

This performance will be a specially arranged and much shortened version of Bach's Christmas Oratorio. Sung in English, the choir performs the best of the choruses from all six parts of the work. Four of the beautiful solos are sung by professional soloists. The Biblical Christmas story is narrated by a reader in episodes during the performance. As in Bach's own performances, the audience is invited to join in singing the simple hymn-like Chorales which punctuate the work.

Everyone is invited to an informal run-through of the Chorales from 6pm if they wish. Music will be provided for those who can use it. Or just come and listen to the performance if you prefer!

Admission is free, with a retiring collection to be shared between the two charities: Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice and Combat Stress.

Please note this event is not suitable for young children.

The service will take place in the courtyard at St James’s, where 100 years ago outdoor services and concerts were regularly held, and will be followed by a concert by the band and refreshments for everyone.
